By announcing support for new and increased services it opens up an array of opportunities for operators and local councils, encouraging sector recovery from the economic effects of the pandemic.
Boris Johnson discussed the plans to deliver 4,000 new zero emission buses, specifically British-built. He stated, "Buses are lifelines and liberators, connecting people to jobs they couldn’t otherwise take, driving pensioners and young people to see their friends, sustaining town centres and protecting the environment".
By accelerating the delivery of new zero emission buses, we are steps closer to tackling climate change and hitting our national net zero targets. Strengthening local bus services and networks doesn’t only have environmental benefits but encourages mobility, social inclusion, improves the overall user experience and expands opportunities for the community.
After delivering the new bus strategy, it was then announced that a legal end date for the sale of diesel buses will soon be set and is currently a subject of consultation.
